Remedies of Boredom and Monotony

1. Use of psychological tests

Level of boredom depends upon the personal characteristics of the workers. The psychological tests can be administered to determine the degree of susceptibility. Psychological tests are used to determine the personality factors related to boredom such as IQ, maladjustment, and introversion.

2. Job enlargement and job rotation

Scope of job should be increased by adding duties and responsibilities. And also giving them scope of doing different jobs. The jobs within the same department and with the same nature of job can be exchanged. 

3. Making job meaningful

In many organizations it has been observed that workers do not even know what and why they are producing a certain thing. The job of the workers should be made more interesting by attaching a meaning with it. They must be provided with the information about the uses and the outcome of their production.

4. Short term goals

Another technique is to set short term goals for the workers. The workers get motivated once a goal is achieved. In such situations the workers feel that they are themselves attached with the job and try to give their best performance towards such goals.

5. Reducing interruptions at work

In some organizations, there is a tendency of the supervisors to interfere in the job of the workers very frequently. Under such situations the workers lose their motivation towards the work and a feeling of boredom and monotony enters into the workplace. Therefore, the interference should be kept up to the level it is required so that a discipline and the uniformity can be maintained within the organization and the worker do not feel suffocated and bored.

6. Increasing the experience of completion

The workers can be given a few words of appreciation that will motivate them to do their job more accurately and more efficiently. Work can be divided into units or section, once a unit gets completed the workers get a feeling of achievement.

7. Rest pauses

The determination of duration and frequency of rest paused is the most important factor that should be considered well. Too short and too long rest periods may affect the performance of the workers negatively rather than positively.

8. Social and recreational activities

These activities break the monotony of work and give employees a change and an opportunity to recharge themselves.
