Chapter 8: The Legal System
Sources of Law
The main source of law in India is the Constitution which gives due recognition to statutes, case law, and customary law, consistent with their dispensations. The statutes are enacted by the Parliament, State Legislatures, and Union Territory Legislatures.
Types of law in India
There are five types of the legal system:
- Civil law
- Common law
- Customary law
- Religious law
- Mixed law.
In the Indian Judicial System, there are four types of law. Criminal law is enforced by the police.
